We put ourselves on the do not call list years ago, but, still find we get automated calls. When I wait for a live person, they will not give me the name of the company, and hang up. I"ve gotten this automated robot voice message a few times from different numbers. It"s quite comical because of the dreadful translation used. It"s quite obvious that it"s some foreign translation done poorly by a non-native speaker. The message goes like this... (There are no typos in the transcription below)
"... from the headquarters that will get expired in 24 hours, and once expired after that you will be taken under custody by the local cops as there are four serious allegations pressed on your name at this moment. I did not call the number but just received a letter with a check. You can tell it is a fake as the address is not lined up and there is only one authorized signature. I did not recognize the company name and it is not in Google. The letter had yellow spots on it.

I do the usual on unknown calls; answer and listen for 5 seconds. I can here what sounds like a voice or voices in distance. I say Hello and no one answers. I wait 10 secs and say hello again. I even try to sound amicable...perhaps I need to sound real happy then they will talk...who knows.

Answered and the caller did not speak. These are harassment calls where the caller is gathering voice data, and any other material possible as spoken by the targeted person. Do Not Call is laughable in its inability to stop these calls.
As they are usually from India or middle Eastern countries, where Canada has no jurisdiction, we are now the object of phone terrorism.
The sooner phone companies can intercept these people the better.
A warning to the elderly, to newcomers to Canada and to Canadians in general NEVER give your credit card, phone number, name or ANY personal information to people over the phone. They are out to harm you and they will.
