ive never experienced it like this before. the person calls claiming to be from cra except THEY called ME and started asking me to confirm my identity. I told them to send me the paper work in the mail

When you register a business number or set up a GST account you can do so without providing full information. These guys then follow up later for stats-can and other purposes to confirm. It feels shifty to be sure - hence why I just looked it up - but it and they are legit. The stupid thing is that to login to the CRA online My Business Account you need to have credentials that are pegged to your SIN#. Part of what this call does is ask if you want to give that now (don"t have to) which makes it feel super scammy, granted, and CRA could do a better job of thinking about this experience from the users point of view. But that would require empathy in government, and that"s a whole other thing...
